million dollar business advice, meh

Hey friend,

Here’s a little note about how my week is going.

I watched the latest episode of Great British Baking Show and thought my favorite baker was robbed of the title of Star Baker for bread week (no spoilers!)

My favorite meal so far has been making a childhood favorite – Lebanese stuffed squash, known as Koosa.

And the funniest thing I saw on the internet was a video of a little girl popping a wheelie while “driving” a powered ride-on kiddy car.

I bet if I asked you to hit reply and tell me what you watched, ate, and laughed about this week, it would be totally different than my list.

That’s because the 3 things above have been my opinions…

So here’s another one. (And it might be a little unpopular when it comes to people who love scaling and automating their businesses like I know you do.)

I recently heard a business owner declare their aim was to take 40 weeks off next year. And I couldn’t help but scratch my head and wonder why you would create a business you’re eager to get away from?

I think this whole notion got started with Tim Ferriss’s book, Four Hour Work Week, where he touted having your business run by a bunch of virtual assistants.

Even though the idea of a business that runs without you sounds appealing, I believe success doesn’t have to mean having to scale a company or even have a million dollar business.

Here’s why: A “million dollar business” which is touted by a lot of internet marketers as the dream, doesn’t necessarily net you more profit than being a solo service provider.

And what a lot of those internet gurus don't tell you is they spend so much money in advertising to gross one million in revenue, that they often have no money left to pay themselves 🤯

My previous experience of trying to follow the gurus and “go big” (with courses, ads, and systems) showed me that none of it made me feel successful. It made me burnt out and like I had to constantly be doing more.

Success is about building a business that compensates you well, gives you freedom, and keeps you excited to show up on Monday.

I love my work and I know that *I* am what makes my business special— my “unreasonable hospitality” and dedication to my clients is unscalable, and that’s my competitive edge, that no million dollar business can touch.

And here’s the ironic thing – I work 3-4 days a week while running a highly profitable company that often outpaces many “million-dollar” businesses in owner take-home pay.

For me, it’s about creating a business you don’t want to escape from, but one that supports your life.

So, friend…

What do you think? Agree or disagree?

Hit reply and let me know.

As always, I want to know your thoughts.
